What is meloxicam used for
Meloxicam tablets are used for:
- Short-term (acute) treatment of flare-ups of osteoarthritis
Long-term treatment of:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
Do not take meloxicam if:
- You are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
- You are a child or adolescent under 16 years of age
- You are allergic to meloxicam or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- You are allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- You have ulcers or a bleeding in your stomach or intestines
- You have severely impaired liver function
- You have recently had bleeding in the brain
- You have severe heart failure
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking meloxicam:
- Meloxicam may be associated with a small increased risk of heart
attack or stroke. If you have heart problems, previous stroke or think
you might be at risk of these conditions, you should discuss your
treatment with your doctor or pharmacist
- Stop your treatment with meloxicam immediately as soon as u notice bleeding or ulceration of your digestive tract
- Stop taking meloxicam if you develop a skin rash or other skin symptoms
Possible side effects
All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most
of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get
some of the side effects.
Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following and they worry you:
- Skin reactions
- Shortness of breath or asthma attack
- Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)
- Jaundice
- Pain in the abdomen, loss of appetite
- Bleeding, ulceration of your digestive tract
Other medicines and meloxicam
Tell your doctor if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.
- Other NSAIDs
- Medicines which prevent blood clotting (warfarin, heparin)
- Medicines which break down blood clots (thrombolytics)
- Medicines to treat heart and kidney diseases
- Corticosteroids
- Cyclosporin
- Any diuretic medicine
- Medicine to treat high blood pressure
- Lithium (used to treat mood disorders)
- Methotrexate (used to treat tumors)
- Cholestyramine (for cholesterol)
How to take meloxicam
- Flare-ups osteoarthritis:
The usual dose is 7.5 mg a day. This may be increased to 15 mg a day
- Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis:
The usual dose is 15 mg a day. Your doctor may reduce your dose to 7.5 mg a day
How to store meloxicam
- Keep it out of the reach of children
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
